Diagnostics

Diagnostic testing is often used to help determine the cause of a health problem and the progress of treatment.

Lab Testing

We may collect blood, urine, tissue or fecal samples to help ensure an accurate diagnosis and to monitor response to treatment for various health issues.

In-house testing: We provide some in-house laboratory tests that allow us to have results very quickly. An examination of cells (cytology) of ear discharge, skin lesions, and feces can be evaluated to determine appropriate drug treatment choices. Urine can be tested for infection, crystals, protein, and to determine its concentration. In-house blood tests include blood glucose tests, blood chemistry panels, packed cell volume determination (red blood cell levels) and pancreatic tests.

Send-out tests: We have excellent local laboratories to aid in our diagnostic testing. They provide access to a wide variety of tests including blood panels, vaccine titres, infectious disease testing (viral, bacterial, fungal), and fluid/tissue evaluation. In addition, these laboratories allow us to work with board-certified veterinary pathologists to gain even more insight into your pet’s health issues.

Radiographs (X-rays)

X-rays can provide essential information in the diagnosis of orthopedic issues as well as many problems within the abdominal and thoracic cavities. Our state-of the art digital radiology system allow us to obtain high quality images quickly, and uses less radiation than traditional x-rays. We also have access to board certified radiologists who can review your pet’s radiographs when needed.

Ultrasounds

Ultrasonography is another imaging tool that can allow us to evaluate tissues within the body. Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to create live images, allowing veterinarians to get an idea of what organs and tissues look like and how they are functioning. This can be especially helpful in diagnosing diseases within the abdomen and in evaluating heart structures and function, but can also be useful in evaluating abnormalities within soft tissues, such as muscles and tendons. In addition, ultrasound images can be of help in emergency situations to quickly pick up potentially life-threatening abnormalities. At the Tsawwassen Animal Hospital we have the ability to do quick, focused ultrasound exams to identify specific abnormalities. We also have a Board Certified Radiologist who visits our clinic regularly to conduct more indepth ultrasound studies.

Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)

The EKG is an effective tool that examines the patterns of electrical impulses within the heart that guide heart movements and function. It is commonly used to evaluate and diagnose heart rhythm abnormalities (arrhythmias) and to pick up damage to the heart muscle and tissue.
